We all like this idea on Iwantoneofthose.com. Customers that type UNDEAD into the search box are presented with a very different look and feel (see below).
It’s a nice idea and it’s very well executed, even down to the ‘your coffin is disappointingly empty’. And if you leave the site and return to it later, the zombie creative is retained, although you can click ‘Normal Site’ on the left at any time.
I’m informed by one of our resident UX geniuses that it’s using javascript - typing ‘undead’ triggers an activateHalloween() javascript method, which adds a class to the body tag. This causes the browser to display the page differently. It doesn’t need to load a new stylesheet, just the appropriate images. Simple, but very effective.
